License and Hunt Information

Licenses

All licenses will be on a draw.  Non-Residents need a deer combo license or elk/deer combo license to hunt in Montana.  The Deer license will be $597.00. Elk license will be $851.00.   Elk/Deer Big Game Combo license prices are $1001.00.  Antelope will be $205.00.   Since our licenses have gone to a draw system, we will ask for $1000 down to hold hunting rifle dates.  $1000 when booking Archery hunts.  If unsuccessful in the draw of the Deer/Elk Combo license, we will refund your deposit.  Balance due 30 days prior to scheduled hunts.

*The prices for the licenses are suseptable to change from one season to the next, refer to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website for exact price for each license.

*Licenses are available through a drawing.

*We recommend that our clients apply for the Deer/Elk Big Game Combination license, instead of the Deer only license. In previous years there have been more left over Deer/Elk Big Game Combination licenses than the Deer Combination license. There is a check box (checkbox #4) on the application that states If you do not draw a Bull Elk license you will receive a refund on the Elk license portion of the fee, otherwise you will receive a cow elk license. The reason beh1ind this recommendation is to ensure that all of our clients have a greater chance at getting a Deer license for the 2017 hunting season. There were over 2000 Deer/Elk combo and Deer combo licenses left over after the 2016 hunting season.

*The two areas for the Elk permit are 799-20 for Rifle Bull Permit, 900-20 for Archery Bull Permit. (These area numbers could change for 2016, please call us (406)436-2120, if you have any questions)

*Timing is Critical! APPLY EARLY - We can assist you in the licensing procedure. We must have our clients booked by the end of February to make sure we get all the paper work done and sent before the March 15th license application deadline.

* Archery antelope tag has gone to a draw but the last year (2016) was 100% draw. Cost is $205.  License deadline is June 1st.  It was a 40% draw on the Rifle Antelope tag in the 2016 hunting season.

*DEPOSIT REFUND - deposits will only be given when there is a failure to obtain a license, written doctor's certificate, or death of an immediate family member

* You can obtain a complete package of the hunting regulations by contacting the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks 1420 East 6th Ave., Helena, MT 59620 Phone: (406) 444-2950 or apply online at www.fwp.mt.gov.

*If you have any problems or questions about how to fill out the license applications, Please Call Rick Gatlin at (406)436-2120 or email at rick@mitchelloutfitting.com

Rifle Hunting in the Powder River Breaks

Our hunts for both mule and whitetail deer and elk take place on private ranches that encompass more than 100 sq. miles in and around Powder River County in Southeastern Montana. The hunting terrain is made up of steep, shale ridges with cedar and pine canyons. We also hunt on rolling hills and plains with more open canyons and draws. Early season hunts can be combination hunts or you may prefer to hunt just for trophy deer during the rut in November.

We book anwhere from 1 to 6 hunters for a five day rifle hunt. You are welcome to apply for the antelope license as well and should you draw, there will be a $300 increase in the price of the hunt.

Archery Mule Deer, Whitetail, Elk and Antelope

This is a very game rich area with plenty of action possible.  Our archery deer hunts start the 4th of September.  The hunts are conducted from ladder stands, water hole blinds and natural brush blinds set up along trails coming from alfalfa fields to bedding areas. Mule deer archery hunts can also be a spot and stalk. If you have your own safety harness, you are encouraged to bring it.  We do have some available.  You may see whitetail or mule deer from the same stand.  Your license is good for either one.  You may add antelope to make it a combo hunt.  We concentrate on the deer early mornings and evenings and focus on antelope midday at the water holds.  I try to set up the stands 20-35 yards from existing trails or water.  See pricing for all archery hunts below.

All licenses will be on a draw for 2017

---->Broadhead Recomendation<----

Our whitetail along the alfalfa fields have a very thick fat layer under the hide which can seal a wound unless a large cutting broadhead is used (The Rage Broadhead is great!).

Archery Water Hole Antelope (Available in Combo Hunt only)

For our archery antelope hunts we have our blinds at waterholes and fence crossings.  These are set up 25-30 yards from the water.  Your shots could be further if the antelope hangs up further out.  Bring cool clothing for setting in the blinds.  The temperature can be 90-105 degrees.  Shorts work well.  You will have a lawn chair to sit in.  We provide you with a large cooler filled with drinks and food.  The days are very long in August and September (15-18 hours).  Brings some books to read since you may spend many hours waiting for the right buck to come to water.  Fixed, bladed broadheads work best for shooting through the mesh on the blind windows.  You must be a dedicated bow hunter to do this hunt!

Deer and Elk Archery Hunts

Clients are recommended to put in for Archery Elk/Deer Big Game Combo license for $1,001. The local elk populations continue to grow, and it is not uncommon to regularly see bull elk on our leases. Elk hunts are conducted during the rut, when the bulls are more responsive to calls and more active around water holes.
